What kind of older person do you want to be? Do you want to be old and bitter, griping and complaining, miserable, unhealthy, overweight, and without the capacity to remain active? Well, of course not. But you and I both know plenty of folks who are that way.
And the bugs do what they can to keep themselves in shape for the fight with your body’s defenses, too. A recent edition of the journal “Nature” reported researchers’ discovery of antibiotic-resistant genes in bacteria they’d found in permafrost that was 30 THOUSAND years old. Scientists have always been awed at how fast bacteria can develop resistance to antibiotic drugs. this latest report shows the bugs have been at it as a natural phenomenon far predating the modern clinical development of antibiotic drugs beginning less than a century ago.
Essentially, for a well-balanced and nutritious diet, you should minimize or eliminate altogether, high levels of fats, saturated and trans fat, sodium, sugars and cholesterol. Fried foods don’t help either. Focus on foods rich in nutrients, fiber, calcium, vitamins, such as A, D, E and B12 to name a few. Increase your intake of fruits, lean meats, green leafy vegetables, and baked foods. Reducing your portion sizes can provide a dramatic boost to maintaining your healthy body by positively affecting your caloric and fat intake. Consuming too many calories is a significant cause of being overweight and unhealthy. So watch those calories.
It is easy to procrastinate or “stick your head” in the sand and say it will never happen to me, but the statistics from the U.S. Department of health and human services estimates that 70 percent of Americans who reach 65 or older will need some sort of long-term care services. For example if you have GERD your plan may not cover Nexium unless you have previously tried ranitidine (Zantac) and/or omeprazole (Prilosec) first. Prior Authorization means that for certain drugs, your plan will not cover the drug without first reviewing your medical and drug history to determine if your treatment steps have been appropriate.
When I had been pregnant the first time I had felt great: beautiful, courageous even majestic. Yes, I also felt tired, fat and nauseated but I loved being pregnant. I didn’t feel all of the awful things most pregnant women felt. I enjoyed being pregnant.
If you still have trouble falling or staying asleep, a visit with your health care provider is in order. I urge you to forgo taking over-the-counter sleep aids until you’ve met with your physician. He or she may recommend over-the-counter sleep aids such as the supplement melatonin, over the counter antihistamines or a prescription medication such as one of the many available benzodiazepines or other hypnotic agents such as Ambien or Lunesta. Precautions should be taken with sleep aids as some have been known to cause unwanted side effects such as nighttime eating and/or sleep walking. In addition, prescription sleep aids are not to be used for long periods of time.
